Fairfield High School is helping to break down barriers in the local community by supporting refugee families at the inaugural Fairfield High School Refugee Expo on 19 May, 2017 from 9.30am to 1.30pm.
Fairfield High School is a major hub for refugee families and is hosting the Expo to support the local community and to highlight the importance of helping those in need.
Refugee families can struggle to settle into a new country, learn to speak another language, find employment and access services. The Expo aims to bring together community organisations, NSW Government agencies and other providers to help refugee families in the area.
Deborah Edwards, Community Engagement Officer at Fairfield High School, said: "The aim of the day is for every attendee to come away with the necessary insight and guidance to become an active and flourishing member of the Australian society."
The Fairfield Intensive English Centre is co-located at Fairfield High School and currently has an enrolment of 370 students from 10 countries. The students spend up to four terms at the intensive English centre, learning English and engaging in a variety of activities to assist with their adjustment.
On offer at the Expo will be a variety of stalls from Multicultural NSW, Sydney Water, Human Services, Energy Ombudsmen, Settlement Services International, and the list goes on. Special guest speakers, lots of entertainment, music, lucky door prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Food will be provided free at the Expo.
