Children's Week Ceremony
25 Oct 2018
On Wednesday 24th October 2018, I had the privilege to see three Fairfield High School students receive the "Newly Arrived Migrant or Refugee Award" for NSW Children's Week 2018. With their families, Sarkees Babaziyan (Year 11), Gabriel Smano (Bridging 1), and Haitham Abdulrazzaq (Year 7) attended the Children's Week Ceremony in Strawberry Hills where they were among the few children and young people in NSW to win such an award.
Children's Week recognises the voice and achievements of young people in our society. This year's theme was Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: "Children's views and opinions are respected. They have the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child and the right to be heard."
Sarkees, Gabriel, and Haitham were nominated by teachers who recognised their leadership capacity, good virtues, and positive contribution to the school and broader community. They are truly deserving of being recipients.
I want to wish Sarkees, Gabriel, and Haitham another big congratulations for receiving this prestigious award and wish them well.
